The AKSHY ASSOCIATION jointly with the NIVEDITA FOUNDATION TRUST is widening its field of action up to the State of Chhattisgarh by means of a Project directed towards the tribal community of the Sabariyas.
Akshy´s objective is to support minority communities in India. India has 600tribes, representing 8% of its total population. These tribal communities are not inside the Indian caste system and have their own culture and social organization. Many of them have no access to Government aid as their tribes are not recognized so they suffer discrimination, unemployment, possess no land and with health centres and schools so far from their villages there is also a lack of education to improve their standard of living.
In the case of the Sabariya community in Chhattisgarh, where we are working with the Nivedita Foundation Trust, the main problem faced by the children is the lack of attention to their education. The Nivedita Foundation Trust is experienced in working with this community to improve the rights of minority groups
The Sabariyas have their own language (the telegu) and do not speak hindu, so the children cannot understand the teachers in the Government schools, find it very hard to follow the lessons and end up not going to school.
2 learning centres, Sagnwaree Learning Centres, have been opend in two different towns. 26 children attend the one in Sakti and in Ghoghra another 24. For 2 hours each day they study hindi, mathematics and English with a teacher. Since the teacher is a member of their own community and speaks the same language, the children acquire a better understanding of subjects in hindu in the State school. There are still, however, many more educational needs to cover such as school materials, salaries, etc.
The principal aim is for the Learning Centres to become a link between the Sabariya culture and the Indian educational system, thus lowering illiteracy in the Sabariya community.
